Everybody knows by now
We are confronted with climate change. It is also clear that to a large extent man has contributed to this. The problem is that through human activities like energy consumption the concentration of greenhouse gasses - among others carbon dioxide - in the atmosphere increases. As a result the average temperature on earth rises. Especially the speed of this global warming process and the related climate change causes considerable risks. One can think of rising sea levels, river flooding and disturbance of drinking water production and agriculture. And there is more: through our increasing energy consumption earth's finite resources become scarce (oil and gas). Although scientists and politicians differ in their appreciation of this problem, a broadly accepted view is that the problem is urgent and time to resolve these issues is scarce.
So we face an enormous challenge. The coming years we should start designing and implementing a sustainable climate, energy and environmental policy. Important elements of this policy are: the transition to renewable energy sources (wind, sun, biomass, but also hydrogen-solutions ), and the combination of primary and secondary measures (energy saving versus new and higher dikes).
